SNARTEMO
This is a reproduction of a 6th century sword from Snartemo, Norway. The sword was made for the National Museum in Norway and their exibition Power and Magic that toured around the country for a couple of years.
The grip was made by first modeling it in in 3d, then printing it, casting it, polishing and then gilding it. The result is very close to the original with the only major difference being the lack of a pattern welded blade.
There was created a special case for it in the exhibition where the audience could reach in and pick up the sword, so creating something that had a faithful handling was one of the goals with this.
The sword is rather famous and been central in Norwegian history, especially during the second world war where the nazis tried to give it as a gift to Heinrich Himmler. You can read more about it here (norwegian).
